2021 NCAA Tournament

Four Iowa teams have made the NCAA tournament this year, so we don't need to do a "Who Should Win" post this year, it should be one of them!  Let's check in on the seasons for the 8 major Iowa college basketball teams in 2020-21.


Iowa Hawkeyes - Women

  • Finished 6th in the Big 10 (11-8)
  • Lost in Big Ten Championship game to Maryland
  • Earned #5 Seed in the NCAA Tournament
  • Beat #12 Central Michigan 87-72 in the 1st Round
  • Beat # 4 Kentucky 86-72 in the 2nd Round
  • Caitlyn Clark : 1st Team All Conference (Unanimous), 1st Team Freshman Team, Freshman of the Year, 2nd Team All-American
  • Monika Czinano : 1st Team All Conference

Iowa State Cyclones - Women

  • Finished 4th in the Big 12 (12-6)
  • Earn #7 Seed in the NCAA Tournament
  • Beat #10 Michigan St. 79-75 in the 1st Round
  • Ashley Joens : 1st Team All Conference (Unanimous)
  • Kristin Scott : 2nd Team All Conference
  • Lexi Donarski : 1st Team Freshman Team, Freshman of the Year
  • Emily Ryan : 1st Team Freshman Team

Northern Iowa Panthers - Women

  • Finished 4th in the Missouri Valley Conference (11-7)
  • WNIT Regional Champions
  • Karli Rucker : 1st Team All-Conference
  • Emerson Green : All-Freshman Team
  • Maya McDermott : All-Freshman Team

Drake Bulldogs - Women

  • Finished 2nd in the Missouri Valley Conference (13-5)
  • WNIT Regional Consolation Champions
  • Grace Berg : 1st Team All-Conference, All-Newcomer Team, Newcomer of the Year
  • Maddie Monahan : 1st Team All-Conference
  • Courtney Becker : All-Freshman Team
  • Maggie Bair : Sixth Player of the Year

Iowa Hawkeyes - Mens

  • Finished 3rd in the Big 10 (14-6)
  • Earned #2 Seed in the NCAA Tournament
  • Beat #15 Grand Canyon University in the 1st Round
  • Luka Garza : 1st Team Unanimous All-American, 1st Team All-Conference, POY Big Ten
  • Joe Wieskamp : 2nd Team All-Conference
  • Keegan Murray : All-Freshman Team
  • CJ Fredrick : All-Sportsmanship Team

Iowa State Cyclones - Mens

  • Finished 20th in the Big 12 (0-18)
  • T.J. Otzelberger hired as new coach
  • Finished season 2-22

Northern Iowa Panthers - Mens

  • Finished 5th in the Missouri Valley Conference (7-11)
  • Finished season 10-15
  • Bowen Born : Freshman of the Year

Drake Bulldogs - Mens

  • Finished 2nd in the Missouri Valley Conference (15-3)
  • Lost in MVC title game to Loyola Chicago
  • Earned  #11 seed in the NCAA Tournament
  • Beat #11 Wichita State in first round

TCdb vs. Beckett - First Impressions

 So I post a couple of weeks ago that I was starting to play around with TCdb.  I've been a loyal Beckett user for years now, and have become more down on it lately.  For collectors like me, it seems that TCdb has gathered a pretty decent sized following and positive reviews.  But how will it work for this collection?  Here's what I found. TCdb Pros Cost You can't complain about the cost (free!).   Its like some of the other big services I use for my collecting, mainly wikipedia and [sport name]-reference.com in that they provide so much information but I just don't know how they do it well.   The Checklists The database is very comparable to Beckett.  Beckett does have some cards that TCdb doesn't have, and visa-versa.  Notable for this blog, Beckett does not list the 2017 Panini Iowa set, and TCdb doesn't have all the Iowa Hawkeye Football team sets from the late 80's, early 90's.   Rankings! NFL Playoffs: Iowa Connections and Wild Card Round Results

   Wild Card Weekend Picks (5-1): Miami (7) over  Kansas City  (4)   Buffalo (6) over Pittsburgh (2) Houston  (4) over Cleveland (2) Detroit  (7) over LA Rams (6) Tampa (7) over Philly (4) Green Bay  (7) over Dallas (2) Five for six is pretty good, but how do we justify that Kansas City win over Miami?  I think we can point to two factors that boosted KC's Iowa score.  First, KC is Caitlin Clark's favorite team, and she was unable to see the game as she was routing Indiana at the same time (on Fox, where this game was on Peacock).  Second, KC imported some good old Iowa weather for the game, and we appreciate that as well.
