The National Part II: Busting Out
Listen, I know this blog is dedicated to the Iowa collector in me, but I do have other collections. Maybe not as many as Dime Box guy (http://baseballdimebox.blogspot.com/), but enough to be crazy. So when I bring home a stack from a card show, I'll sort it by sport. Then I break it down further, which I'll explain using Baseball. The categories are:
1. Favorite Team : Twins
2. Iowa Players : (i.e. Michael Wacha, Bob Feller, Jeff Clement)
3. Cards to trade
4. Players I watched in the minors (Lived in Omaha so a few Omaha Royals)
5. Random players I collect : i.e. Kenny Lofton, Will Clark, Buster Posey
6. Random sets I collect: Topps Rookie Cup, Hologram sets, Ginter inserts, Diamond Kings
7. Busts
Today I'm going to talk about #7, my Bust collection. I collect RCs of busts. When I say bust, I mean a player who came into the league super hyped, and just didn't pan out for whatever reason. So Nathan Peterman would not count because there just wasn't the hype. Jared Goff was probably too successful to count, but we'll see how Detroit goes this year.
The poster boy for this collection is Todd Marinovich. Others include Ryan Leaf, Tim Couch, Cade McCown, Jim Druckenmiller, Curtis Enis, and Ki-Jana Carter. Everyone had different reason for not making it (and to be fair, not making it in the pros means that they are still in the Top 1% anyway). Even though the pros may not want you, there will be a place for you in my collection.
So, the collection is mostly Football. Basketball players don't bust out as much (I mean, I still have Darko in my collection), and baseball players don't hype in quite the same way (though Ben McDonald and Kevin Maas still visit here). Mostly QBs, as we can't help ourselves with these guys (JaMarcus! Haskins!)However, I'm not paying a premium for these guys, or even value for them. Pure dime box rescue or maybe quarter box finds. This gambit will pay off when I transport back in time to when their value was sky high!
Anyway, at the National I pulled 51 bust cards, and 49 of them were needs! One Druckenmiller that I bought twice (honestly surprised it doesn't happen more), and one Heath Shuler I already had.
This Lawrence Phillips was a fun find, as it was a National card from 1996!
If someone out there is looking to build a collection (or side collection) on the cheap, this seems like it would be a good one to do.
