2023 Iowa Collection Update : Basketball Part 2 (Hawkeyes)

 I wonder if you know which Hawkeye has the most basketball cards?  While you ponder this, there are two Hall of Famers in the top 7, one Naismith Player of the Year, a 3x NBA champ and a hot NBA rookie.  Of course #1 is none of those.  


Let's start with the Hall of Famers.  Connie Hawkins (5) and Don Nelson (7) top the HOF list, with Lute Olson lower, and C. Vivian Stringer WAY down the list with only four cards (sad).  

#6 may surprise you.  Its Adam Haluska with 253 cards.  253 more cards than NBA games he played in.  Still, super glad to see it because he was a fun player.



#4 is Keegan Murray, who by the end of the year may be #1, so long as nothing dramatic happens.  #3 is B.J. Armstrong, winner of three NBA titles carrying those bums Jordan, Pippen, Grant and Phil Jackson along.  At #2 is Luka Garza.  All his cards are from last season, but has had some playing time with Minnesota this year so he may continue to grow his collection (only 34 behind #1).

Well if you haven't guessed it yet, #1 is Ricky Davis.  957 cards over 12 seasons in the NBA.  Pretty decent career, and a nice number of cards that will be eclipsed in 1 season by Keegan Murray (thanks Leaf and Panini,  can't wait to search for a Blanched Almond colored version numbered to #FFCD00)



As for the collection, I added 52 Hawkeyes this year.  Leading the way was BJ Armstrong and Keegan Murray with 6 each.  Megan Gustafson, Keegan Murray, Caitlin Clark, Toni Foster,  Jim Bartels and Tyler Cook each added their first cards.  

 



I am currently the #1 Caitlin Clark collector, however the collection is only 1 card long so maybe I shouldn't brag too much.  She is ineligible to declare for the WNBA draft next year, so we must have to wait until 2024 for her WNBA cards.  Unless she signs a NIL deal....wait a minute...



Be on the lookout this year for some Topps cards.  Topps Now or those made to order Bowman cards?  We'll have to wait and see.

NFL Playoffs: Iowa Connections and Wild Card Round Results

   Wild Card Weekend Picks (5-1): Miami (7) over  Kansas City  (4)   Buffalo (6) over Pittsburgh (2) Houston  (4) over Cleveland (2) Detroit  (7) over LA Rams (6) Tampa (7) over Philly (4) Green Bay  (7) over Dallas (2) Five for six is pretty good, but how do we justify that Kansas City win over Miami?  I think we can point to two factors that boosted KC's Iowa score.  First, KC is Caitlin Clark's favorite team, and she was unable to see the game as she was routing Indiana at the same time (on Fox, where this game was on Peacock).  Second, KC imported some good old Iowa weather for the game, and we appreciate that as well.

TCdb vs. Beckett - First Impressions

 So I post a couple of weeks ago that I was starting to play around with TCdb.  I've been a loyal Beckett user for years now, and have become more down on it lately.  For collectors like me, it seems that TCdb has gathered a pretty decent sized following and positive reviews.  But how will it work for this collection?  Here's what I found. TCdb Pros Cost You can't complain about the cost (free!).   Its like some of the other big services I use for my collecting, mainly wikipedia and [sport name]-reference.com in that they provide so much information but I just don't know how they do it well.   The Checklists The database is very comparable to Beckett.  Beckett does have some cards that TCdb doesn't have, and visa-versa.  Notable for this blog, Beckett does not list the 2017 Panini Iowa set, and TCdb doesn't have all the Iowa Hawkeye Football team sets from the late 80's, early 90's.   Rankings!
